Mike Miller is a man of few words, but, once he starts talking about his work as a Dupré driver, his family, or his passion, “Miller’s BBQ,” you quickly learn that he is as layered as his bar-b-que seasonings and sauces.
Miller has been with Dupré since September 5, 1984. A total of 35 years with one company is unusual today, but for Miller, this sort of loyalty is just who he is. Before joining Dupré, his “team player” attitude earned him the nickname Goobie, because he was always willing to take a load no one else was willing to take. Through the dispatcher network, the nickname and the willingness to help stuck and has followed Goobie over three decades later.
Getting his start as a gasoline driver, then becoming the first Dupré chemical fleet driver, Miller later spent 25 years with Dupré Over The Road and as a driver trainer. According to Vice President of Safety and Risk Management Al LaCombe, Miller has shared his wisdom and experience with nearly 100 drivers during his tenure as a driver trainer and later as a mentor to new drivers he has met along the way. LaCombe estimates that Mike has driven a little over three million miles during his tenure at Dupré. For the last ten years, Mike has worked with the Dedicated Team providing his wealth of knowledge and experience along the way.
When asked Mike answered, “There are good people here, and I’ve always been happy and satisfied here.”
Off the Road
Miller puts as much passion into his cooking at the family-owned bar-b-que stand as he does into driving a truck for Dupré. From pork steaks to chicken, hot links or hamburgers, Miller’s BBQ is slow-cooked to perfection and is made from the heart (and is quite delicious according to our sources)!
Off the road, Miller and his wife Clara spend time with their family and Zydeco dance on weekends. After 35 years on the road, even in his off-time, Miller does not stay still, running “Miller’s BBQ” on Saturdays and Sundays. Speaking of running, Mike held the 1973 record for St. Landry Parish 800-meter dash. Some things never change.
